Herkimer Diamonds are found in Herkimer County New York, about 60 miles east of Ithaca. They were named "diamonds" sometime in the 1800's. They are exceptionally clear, double terminated Quartz crystals. They often have inclusions of Anthraxolite, a form of coal, although the most highly prized are perfectly clear. They form in small pockets within a host rock of dolomite. Dolomite is silicated limestone and is incredibly hard. Given enough space within the crystal pocket, herks often form in clusters of several crystals. Although they grew together and were once connected, 99% of the time herks are found as separate crystals that can be reconstructed to their original crystallized configuration. The complete crystals literally fit back together like a jigsaw puzzle, and are then epoxied. 1) Here is a fine example of a Herkimer diamond cluster. These have been reconstructed, and show the original growth configuration. The piece weighs 12 grams. It's 3.2 cm tall by 2.7 cm wide by 1.5 cm thick. There are 3 major crystals connected with 2 smaller ones. Price: $65
