Quartz aka Quartz aka Quartz aka

QUARTZ2 - Quartz aka "Spirit Quartz"
$ 95.00 (=~ € 88.85) SOLD
Near Pretoria, South Africa
thumbnail - 9.0 x 9.6 x 7 cm

Spirit Quartz is found in South Africa. It's unusual in that drusy Amethyst grows over an opaque Quartz shaft, thus creating a sparkly, cactus-like specimen. I learned with considerable glee, that this Quartz was not named "Spirit Quartz," because of any isoteric, or transcendental reasons. The African miners named it Spirit Quartz because when they found the good color (a rich purple) they could then get paid and buy some of the readily available "mentholated Spirits," at the local liquor store. Apparently both Spirit Quartz and Mentholated spirits have the same purple color!

This piece is aesthetic and has crystals that are on average 9 cm (3 1/2 inches) long. It displays well, and is in good condition. Unseen from the displayable angle, on the back there is a patch where some of the drusy Amethyst came off, thus exposing the primary Quartz shaft, probably when it was extracted.

QUARTZ3 - Quartz with Blue Fluorite inclusions (hand polished)
$ 135.00 (=~ € 126.26) SOLD
Miandrivazo Province, Madagascar
thumbnail - 7.8 x 1.7 x 1.4 cm

This is an excellent example of the limited find of prismatic Quartz crystals with small blue Fluorite crystals included within them. All of the crystals found, were in frosty Quartz, such that polishing really enabled a proper view at what these extraordinary. This is a bright crystal, with the fluorites well positioned in the top third of the crystal for easy viewing in a showcase. Although you can't see it without a hand lens, there is a miniscule chip off the backside of the termination.

Quartz var. Amethyst Quartz var. Amethyst

QUARTZ4 - Quartz var. Amethyst "flower"
$ 160.00 (=~ € 149.64) SOLD
Irai, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
cabinet - 13 x 9 x 3 cm

In the same general area of the Amethyst geodes from southern Brazil, there is another deposit that produces elegant Amethyst "flowers," like this one. They form in basalt (ancient volcanic flows), with very little room to crystallize. the result are thin 'sheets' of Quartz that catch the light and add attractive vertical composition to your collection. This piece is in excellent condition, and displays a range of color from clear to a moderate purple/lavender.

PHENAKITE1 - Phenakite
$ 135.00 (=~ € 126.26) SOLD
San Miguel de Piracicaba, Minas Gerais, Brazil
thumbnail - 3.1 x 2.1 x 2.7 cm

This is large for Phenakite crystals I have seen over the last 20 years. It was mined prior to 1970 (probably much earlier, but not sure). It is a classic "fan," shape with good crystal faces. There's no visible dings, and the bottom is contact with another crystal (not broken).

CREEDITE1 - Creedite on Rhyolite
$ 125.00 (=~ € 116.90) SOLD
Abasolo Mine, Navidad, Durango, Mexico
small cabinet - 7 x 5.2 x 5.3 cm

This Creedite is neatly perched on a matrix of Rhyolitic host rock. Most Creedite specimens are not on matrix, and are commonly damaged. This one is in excellent condition. Creedites are found in a highly mineralized clay (that affects their color), within a Breccia Pipe, that had injected hot solution that later crystallized as Creedite. Mining these is fraught with danger, as cave-ins are quite common, and have finished recent production (according to Mike New).

SPHALERITE1 - Sphalerite on Quartz
$ 195.00 (=~ € 182.37)
Shuikoushan Lead/Zinc Mine, Chaling, Hunan Province, China
cabinet - 11.5 x 8 x 6 cm

Two very large Sphalerite crystals are pleasantly perched on a bed of clear Quartz crystals. On top of the Sphalerites are water clear Drusy Quartz crystal clusters. This piece is aesthetic, especially in its contrast. The dark orangey Sphalerites vs. the white/clear quartz. The Sphalerites are relatively rounded, vs. the Quartz pointiness. And finally the tiny, fine druzy clear Quartz contrasts the larger cluster of points. It's in good condition overall. There's a minor blemish on the far right side of the lower Sphalerite crystal. Comes with a 1.25 inch three-prong acrylic stand.

MOLDAVITE6 - Moldavite
$ 235.00 (=~ € 219.78) SOLD NET
Chlum, Moldau River valley, Czech Republic
miniature - 4.6 x 4.5 x 1.2 cm

Moldavite is a green tektite. A tektite is an impact glass, created due to the impact of a meteorite with the earth's crust. It is believed that the meteorite that created the Ries Kessel (a massive 15 mile diameter crater), 120 miles away in Germany "splashed," hot material into the atmosphere that cooled as it fell back to Earth. This impact material, landed across a relatively small (10 to 15 square mile) area in the current Czech Republic. This impact event is dated around 15 million years ago. Moldavite miners must dig holes to access this old layer in which the Moldavite is found. Moldavite is typically quite small, with the largest pieces generally available, weighing between 30 to 50 grams (up to 6-7 cm long). Moldavite is valued for its size (larger pieces are much rarer), condition (lack of damage), an attractive green color, and how textured, or "spikey," the surface is.

This piece has it all. It is large, gemmy green and textured. It weighs 23.7 grams. It has two very minor chips that are hard to spot.

This exceptional Moldavite has excellent color, great texturing and is without damage. Pieces this good are hard to come by. It weighs 21.8 grams.
