Dahlonega is the location of the first major United States Gold Rush. In 1828 a belt of gold was discovered on Cherokee Indian land in Georgia causing a large influx of miners. First the town of Auraria sprang up around the mines. Then nearby Dahlonega, named from the Cherokee language meaning yellow money, became the newly-formed Lumpkin County seat. That led to the establishment of United States Branch Mints at Dahlonega, Georgia and Charlotte, North Carolina by a Congressional Act in 1835. The two branch mints produced their first gold coinage in 1838.(from http://dahlonegagoldrush.com)
