MOLDAVITE1 - Moldavite
$ 75.00 (=~ CAN$ 101.15) SOLD
near Chlum, Moldau River Valley, Czech Republic
miniature - 3.7 x 2.2 x 1.7 cm

Moldavite is a green tektite. A tektite is an impact glass, created due to the impact of a meteorite with the earth's crust. It is believed that the meteorite that created the Ries Kessel (a massive 15 mile diameter crater), 120 miles away in Germany "splashed," hot material into the atmosphere that cooled as it fell back to Earth. This impact material, landed across a relatively small (10 to 15 square mile) area in the current Czech Republic. This impact event is dated around 15 million years ago. Moldavite miners must dig holes to access this old layer in which the Moldavite is found. Moldavite is typically quite small, with the largest pieces generally available, weighing between 30 to 50 grams (up to 6-7 cm long). Moldavite is valued for its size (larger pieces are much rarer), condition (lack of damage), an attractive green color, and how textured, or "spikey," the surface is.  This piece weighs 9.2 grams. It's in excellent condition, with good color. it naturally 'sits,' has good texturing and has a curious triangular shape.

PREHNITE1 - Prehnite with Epidote (polished)
$ 125.00 (=~ CAN$ 168.59) SOLD
Mali
thumbnail - 13 x 9.3 x 4.3 cm

I bought a very large lot of Prehnite and Epidote rough two years ago. The color was exceptional but all the pieces had been dinged and scrapped. In the small African country of Mali, similar to other places, minerals are roughly thrown in a sack for storage and transport. I sent the lot to Hong Kong where they were tumbled and hand polished. This is one of the very best from the entire lot. (I held it back for the web site!) It weighs 486 grams (over a pound). It has great, deep color and is pleasantly smooth and fun to hold.

QUARTZ6 - Quartz with Epidote inclusions
$ 75.00 (=~ CAN$ 101.15) SOLD
Ankaraka, Madagascar
small cabinet - 9 x 4.5 x 3.5 cm

This interesting Quartz crystal gets its color from numerous fine "phantom" layers of Epidote, in otherwise clear Quartz. We have had "first pick," of this material for over 10 years. It is found in a remote central, northern area of Madagascar, at a location that also produces gem quality Titanite (aka Sphene). The form of this crystal is particularly neat because it seems to only have three sides. Looking down its C-axis, (from the top-down) one can see how the typical six-sided crystal "evolved," into the three sided, elongated specimen.

SIKHOTE3 - Sikhote-Alin Meteorite
$ 225.00 (=~ CAN$ 303.46) SOLD
Sikhote-Alin Mountains, Eastern Siberia, Russia
miniature - 4.8 x 4 x 2.2 cm

This iron meteorite fell on Feb. 12, 1947 in the Sikhote-alin Mountains of Eastern Siberia, Russia. It is the largest observed meteorite fall in history, with over 23000 kg raining down on the earth in the form of iron shrapnel and the more rare individual fallen meteorites such as this one. It is covered in regmaglypts, the indentations that give the piece contours. I put this piece away, back when this meteorite was readily available on the market. A couple years ago, the Russian government has made it difficult to export, and diggers I knew said there was almost nothing left to find. This piece roughly resembles a conventional 'star' shape. It weighs 90.8 grams

AMETHYST3 - Quartz, Var. Amethyst "Flower"
$ 375.00 (=~ CAN$ 505.77) SOLD
Irai, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil
large cabinet - 19 x 19.5 x 4 cm

This is a gorgeous example of this form of Quartz. In the same general area of the Amethyst geodes from southern Brazil, there is another deposit that produces elegant Amethyst "flowers," like this one. They form in basalt (ancient volcanic flows), with very little room to crystallize. the result are thin 'sheets' of Quartz that catch the light and add attractive vertical composition to your collection. This piece is in excellent condition, and displays a range of color from clear to a moderate purple/lavender. The second picture shows a 5 x 3.5 cm (2 inch wide) acrylic stand as scale. This is a large piece! It is in pristine condition, and is a beautiful display piece. This came from the Hawthorneden inventory, as they had purchased it on location in Brazil. A normal retail on this piece would be around $650.

AMETHYST4 - Quartz, Var. Amethyst with Prehnite
$ 495.00 (=~ CAN$ 667.62) SOLD
Goboboseb Mtns. Brandberg Dist. Erongo Region, Namibia
small cabinet - 6 x 4.7 x 2.6 cm

This piece is unique due its 'cocoon,' of attractive green Prehnite. The Amethyst has inclusions of small flecks of Hematite. There are purple and black zoning bands near the top of the Quartz. I have seen thousands of these crystals hit the market over the last 14 years, and this is the best prehnite associated specimen I've seen during that time period. Crystals from this area are often misidentified as being from "Brandberg, Namibia," which is actually a deposit within a nature preserve in the same district. The Goboboseb mountains, in the Erongo region from which this cluster was found, is know for its remoteness, as the nearest water source is over 35 kilometers away. The host basalt has been dated to over a billion years old. I have discussed this with geologists, who have theorized that Quartz crystals from the Goboboseb mountains have probably been crystallized for over a Billion years!  On the top left face of the Quartz crystal the surface has slight etching due to Prehnite that had been removed from a small portion of that face.

OLMIITE4 - Olmiite on Calcite
$ 145.00 (=~ CAN$ 195.57)
N Chwanning II Mine, Kuruman, Republic of South Africa
small cabinet - 5.5 x 3.8 x 1.7 cm

Once regarded as Poldervaartite, this mineral was later known to be Olmiite due to a higher concentration of Manganese than originally observed. This was found around 2000 from a substantial pocket, purchased by Charlie Key. This fine example shows crystals of Olmiite with two different colors; one a milky beige, and the other a more transparent salmon color. It's in great condition. It has a glassy, bright surface. It comes mounted on a 1.25 inch/ 3 cm acrylic base.

SPINEL1 - Blue Spinel on Matrix
$ 125.00 (=~ CAN$ 168.59) SOLD
Beraketa, Madagascar
cabinet - 9.5 x 8.5 x 5 cm

This material is not readily available. I had bought a parcel of these many years ago, and finally managed to finish cleaning them. This is the best of the lot. The largest Spinel is about 1.2 cm across.

TOURM8 - Tourmaline var. Elbaite
$ 195.00 (=~ CAN$ 263.00) SOLD NET
Pech, Afghanistan
small cabinet - 5.2 x .8 x .8 cm

This is an electric green gem Tourmaline. Gem Tourmaline crystals have always been Dr. Steve Smale's favorites. I acquired this from him before he moved to Hong Kong. It comes with his personal collection label as pictured. It is internally clean and shows a beautiful gradient of color from its base to its termination. It weighs 6.7 grams.

OPAL3 - Opal (polished)
$ 245.00 (=~ CAN$ 330.44)
Jalisco, Mexico
thumbnail - 2.6 x 1.4 x .9 cm

Mexican Opal from Jalisco is prized for its transparency, fire and stability. I acquire this opal directly from the miners, who cut and polish the pieces by hand. The opal forms in a reddish matrix and when extremely good pieces are found, they carve away the matrix, and polish the remaining opal. The net result is a totally unique, highly lustrous free form. It can be set in jewelry or left in its own case to be displayed. This excellent example weighs 10.90 carats.
