Soghan, near Jiroft, Kerman Province, Iran
thumbnail - 2.8 x 2.4 x 2.3 cm

I remember seeing a few of these about 5 years ago, most of them were small (1/2 inch). I got this one out of a collection, and it is quite large for this location. The color is quite rich and green, and it comes mounted on an acrylic stand. The first pic is from the front, second is its left side, the third is from the top looking down, and the fourth one is its right side.

This beautiful gem crystal weighs 135 grams. It is 80% gem clear, and is partially double terminated (the other side of the second termination was contacted on prior host rock). It has a light cognac color, and is in excellent condition, with only a few minor nibbles around the bottom half of the crystal.

This showy Topaz is bright and has hints of pink, added to its overall orange hue. It's in great condition with only a small ding near the base. The termination is quite prismatic compared with other crystals that have flat topped terminations.

APOPHYLLITE2 - Apophyllite with Stilbite
$ 375.00 (=~ ¥ 55356.94) SOLD NET
Poonah District, Maharashtra, India
small cabinet - 7.5 x 6 x 6 cm

This piece was found around 1989. The mine in Poonah became famous for producing emerald green Apophyllites. Apparently the mine was terrible for the brown basalt or "road rock," it was being mined for. The basalt was porous and of little value. the Apophyllites mined there were exceptionally valuable, unfortunately the mine was not operating for very long and closed around 20 years ago. Housing was constructed on the mine and it won't be re-opened anytime soon. In this region, most interesting Apophyllites are found when villagers dig wells, and encounter pockets of zeolites. This piece showcases two long green crystals that rest on one another and are aesthetically sprinkled with bright white Stilbite crystals. It's in great shape. The tallest Apophyllite crystal has a very slight flat termination, the lower one is needle sharp. It comes mounted on an acrylic base.

$ 295.00 (=~ ¥ 43547.46) SOLD
Denton Mine, Cave-in-rock District, Illinois
small cabinet - 6.5 x 5.7 x 4.6 cm

This bi-colored fluorite is from the Les Tolonen collection. We were able to acquire 100 flats from him representing his 100 trips to the cave-in-rock district spanning 35 years of his doing business in the area while it was in production. It shows two shades of purple and light blue, leading to a yellow core. It shows several intergrown crystals in excellent condition with only a small ding on one edge near the far right side. Good bi-colored fluorites are hard to find regardless of where you look worldwide.

Zazafotsy Quarry (Amboarohy), Ihosy District, Horombe Region, Fianarantsoa Province, Madagascar
miniature - 3.7 x 4.5 x 2.3 cm

I got this piece in a large lot about 6 years ago. I recently raided the stash, as these are no longer on the market. Two neatly perched sapphires are "nesting," on calcite in a black, shiny Schist. They are in good shape, with a minor abrasion on a corner of the larger crystal (hard to see). Great color for this location.

small cabinet - 8.5 x 6 x 6.5 cm

This is a cool composition of minerals. It has dynamic structure, with multi-directional Feldspar crystals. Half of it has a black Manganese coating which is heavily coated with highly fluorescent Hyalite opal. The aesthetics of this piece has an artistic style to it, balance and contrast. It has no visible damage.

QUARTZ13 - Quartz with petroleum inclusions
$ 55.00 (=~ ¥ 8119.02) SOLD
Zhob Baluchistan, Pakistan
thumbnail - 2.2 x 1.6 x 1.5 cm

This is a fine example of this uncommon form of Quartz. It is a four phase inclusion in a double terminated Quartz crystal found in central Pakistan 4 years ago. It is highly fluorescent under both short wave and long wave (SW pictured). There is at leas tone moving bubble that moves within the yellow petroleum. The gas bubble forms when the the Quartz cools after forming, the petroleum contracts more than the Quartz because it is less dense, it pulls a vacume within the fluid thus creating a "gas" bubble.  The four phases are: the gas bubble trapped in the petroleum, the petroleum itself, a darker brown previously organic material, and black carbon inclusions. I learned this from an insightful geologist who specializes in Quartz inclusions, whom I met at the Tucson Main show. This crystal has an attractive gold and black color range. It's in fine condition with a small contact on its underside that doesn't detract.

$ 950.00 (=~ ¥ 140237.58) SOLD NET
Eden Mills, Vermont
small cabinet - 6.8 x 3.5 x 4.0 cm

Here is a beautiful example from a classic location. It came out of an old collection, as is the case from this closed locality. This one was collected in the 1950's. The bright orange-red garnets are perched on well crystallized diopside crystals. There are a total of four garnets, front and back. The largest measures 1.0 x .8 cm, it has a slight inclusion that is internal on its top side. It comes mounted on an acrylic base. Eden Mills garnets are hardly ever on the market.

$ 295.00 (=~ ¥ 43547.46) SOLD NET
Chlum, Moldau River valley, Czech Republic
thumbnail - 5.5 x 3.3 x 1.4 cm

Moldavite is a green tektite. A tektite is an impact glass, created due to the impact of a meteorite with the earth's crust. It is believed that the meteorite that created the Ries Kessel (a massive 15 mile diameter crater), 120 miles away in Germany "splashed," hot material into the atmosphere that cooled as it fell back to Earth. This impact material, landed across a relatively small (10 to 15 square mile) area in the current Czech Republic. This impact event is dated around 15 million years ago. Moldavite miners must dig holes to access this old layer in which the Moldavite is found. Moldavite is typically quite small, with the largest pieces generally available, weighing between 30 to 50 grams (up to 6-7 cm long). Moldavite is valued for its size (larger pieces are much rarer), condition (lack of damage), an attractive green color, and how textured, or "spikey," the surface is.

This extra large piece of Moldavite weighs 31.4 grams. It has fantastic color, and is transparent inside. It has a natural crescent shape, which is one of the indicative tektitic shapes. It has an interesting textured surface as well. Overall this is a great piece worthy of any collection. Pieces over 30 grams are getting increasingly rare to find, and continue to go up in price.
