SAPPHIRE1 - Sapphire in Schist
$ 499.00 SOLD
Zazafotsy Quarry (Amboarohy), Ihosy District, Horombe Region, Fianarantsoa Province, Madagascar
small cabinet - 6.5 x 5.8 x 5 cm

This is an unusually large polychrome Sapphire crystal, still embedded in its Schist matrix. The Sapphire is an impressive 2.8 x 2.5 x 1.6 cm. There are two minor sapphires on the back right side that each are about 1.5 cm the crystals actually form with a calcite 'jacket,' within the schist. The prominent crystal is an attractive blend of purple and pink. As is common with this deposit, some aspects of the Corundum crystals intergrow with the schist (hence the black spot on the front corner). this material hasn't been available on the market for about 4 years. I personally exposed the primary crystal as only a small portion was originally showing. It sold immediately 4 years ago, and I recently got it back as part of a large trade.

OPAL1 - Opal
$ 125.00 SOLD NET
Shoa valley, Ethiopia
thumbnail - 2.6 x 1.7 x 1.3 cm

This spectacular piece of opal was found within the last year in the Shoa Valley in Ethiopia. Although opal has been found in Ethiopia for many years, this new deposit also known as 'desert opal,' can be brilliant and colorful. This piece is extraordinary and has been held in reserve for our web site re-launch. Desert opal has been known to develop internal fractures. For good pieces like this one, we let it 'dry out' for several months. We have cut a number of stones from this material, in which case we let the stones 'rest,' for a year, just to make sure it hasn't developed any crazing. This stone is solid, without any problems, and is a fine example of this spectacular new deposit. It looks great in a variety of lighting, and displays easily. It weighs 18.70 carats (3.74 grams).

The color combination is attractive, as well as the proportions of the Emerald to the matrix. It's also in excellent condition, and has not been repaired or enhanced in any way. Emeralds from this location in Columbia have been mined for over 500 years. It weighs 19.10 carats/ 3.82 grams.

AMETHYST5 - Quartz var. Amethyst
$ 795.00 SOLD NET
Reel Mine, Lincoln Co., North Carolina
large cabinet - 17 x 14 x 7.5 cm

This awesome amethyst is a radial "burst," of crystallization. We recently acquired this beautiful example of Reel mine Amethyst from a collection in central North Carolina. This mine has been 'winding down,' for several years, and high quality clusters like this one are few and far between. The color is excellent (more purple in person), and the condition is great for this location (damage is very common). There is a minor ding in the bottom middle of the piece, but the range of large crystals make it hard to spot. Two of about 40 crystals have tiny wilburs, that are much harder to spot. Overall, this is an excellent example and hard to find. It weighs 1400 grams/ over 3 pounds.

DEMANTOID5 - Garnet var. Demantoid
$ 2350.00 SOLD NET
Ambanja Dist., Diana Region, Antsiranana Prov., Madagascar
small cabinet - 6.3 x 4.5 x 4.3 cm

This relatively new deposit of Demantoid garnets were found in a mangrove swamp, on the northwest coast of Madagascar. As is typical in Madagascar, when a few gem pebbles are found, a massive "rush," happens. In this case miners must dig holes 6 - 30 feet deep, but only at low tide. According to my friend who traveled to the site, the best colors were found early on in the strike. As the deposit has played out and gotten deeper, the colors have shifted to a more brownish shade of green. These crystals are TOP. The color is great, the crystals are glassy and very large for this deposit. The biggest garnet is 1.3 x 1.3 x .6 cm!  My friend spent several months at this location when the "rush," first occurred. This was the best specimen he was able to get over that period of time.

DEMANTOID6 - Garnet var. Demantoid
$ 375.00 SOLD NET
Ambanja Dist., Diana Region, Antsiranana Prov., Madagascar
miniature - 4 x 3.8 x3.5 cm

This relatively new deposit of Demantoid garnets were found in a mangrove swamp, on the northwest coast of Madagascar. As is typical in Madagascar, when a few gem pebbles are found, a massive "rush," happens. In this case miners must dig holes 6 - 30 feet deep, but only at low tide. According to my friend who traveled to the site, the best colors were found early on in the strike. As the deposit has played out and gotten deeper, the colors have shifted to a more brownish shade of green. This specimen has tiny, druzy demantoid crystals framing three larger crystals. The largest is about .9 cm, and the smaller ones are about .7cm. They have excellent color, are gemmy and in good condition (no dings).
